PIP A Midsummer Night's Dream

Midsummer_nights_dream

We are so proud of you, Jim and Olivia!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since Theatre Ensemble's beginnings,
15 years ago. It has been a lot of hard work and effort, and today you have formed PIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were so honoured to be there on the FIRST performance of PIP.

We are extra extra proud of you, to hear you, Olivia tell us how you felt about the performance in such a humble way. You told us, how after seeing Pina Bausch and Peter Brooks performances, you felt that there is so much more you can improve on. You told us how the great masters in the world create theatre pieces that is like the spine of the body. Your team thinks the performance is great, but you are aiming at world top class performers, choreographers, directors.

The thing is, there will always be room for improvement, but we think this theatre piece is world class! It is miraculous that you have struck such a great balance between art and commerce, and to have created this passionately humourous interpretation of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. We loved the judo outfits of the lovers, the set, Jim's role in the piece, the music, and of course all the performers!!!!!!!!

It was very touching to read in your booklet, " Standing before classic plays, one becomes very small, and will learn how to learn through modesty and being humble. We forget how big the world is, people become arrogant. There is this Chinese proverb about the frog who lives at the bottom of a well, and thinks they know about the world. In a rootless place like Hong Kong, we have always neglected the importance of history and culture......."

If you haven't seen this performance, and you're in Hong Kong, you NEED to go get tickets now!!!!!!!! it is ending this Sunday!

Daydream Nation in Dazed Digital

Dazed
another great report by Sonia Zhuravlyova on Dazed Digital.

Daydream Nation is a fashion/theatre project by brother and sister Kay and Jing Wong, both Central St Martins graduates. Their aim is to design garments that tell stories. "Daydream Nation is the name of a Sonic Youth album," says Jing, "but it only struck me one day when I read about a theatre director called Phelim McDermott who believed that society has a 'Racism against Daydreamers'. Being born in the rigid Hong Kong education system that stifles creativity, we found it our mission to cultivate a culture of imagination."

Their AW 08 collection, "Good Night Deer", tells the Kafka-esque story of a deer hunter who wakes one day and finds himself transformed into the deer he killed. Accompanied by the caterwauling band Naked with Horses, who are dressed up in deer head-gear, the models slowly act out the scenes of the tale.

Jing's specialty is theatre and Kay is the authority on fashion. Although billed as a fashion-meet-theatre experience, this performance is of course a vehicle to showcase the designers' pieces. "The idea came from a comic I saw on the internet," says Jing. "A couple are going to bed, the husband turns to his wife and says 'good night honey' - and she's really a pot of honey, and she turns around and says 'good night dear' - and he's really a deer. This is where the name for the collection comes from. The name reflects that it's an autumnal collection, the colours are dark."

The result is more creative freedom that either a conventional theatrical experience or a run-of-the-mill fashion show could allow. By creating a catwalk narrative, the garments are allowed to come alive. Some of them are unbelievable creations - like the two-man trouser suit which forms the deer - and the majority of garments get the space and time that they wouldn't on a conventional catwalk. It's clear from the performances that you'd be able to move around freely in Jing and Kay's fey creations.

The clothes themselves are simply-cut shift dresses with slashed necks and similar tops, in foresty hues - all browns and greens and a lot of black. I particularly like the turquoise striped top, apparently symbolizing the lake where the hunter goes to wash the blood from his hands after he kills the deer.

"Storytelling is very important to me and these clothes are designed for playful people," says Jing. "Me and Kay do the sketchbook together, but she looks after the practical side of actually making the clothes". Kay confirms: "Jing is the creative force behind everything. I'm much more practical."

The label is based in Hong Kong, but the pair will be back with their SS 09 collection next year. Meanwhile, their clothes can be found in the Old Curiosity Shop in Holborn.

Milk reports on Daydream Nation AW08 Good Night Deer show.

Milk_1_small
a very sweet report on our AW08 show, Good Night Deer, by Milk magazine. for those who can't read chinese,
here's a simple translation:

Daydream Nation
we like daydream nation, still remember last seeing their products, cloud bags and hand bags, they were so cute!! The last night at Fashion Week, the last show was to go to Institute of Contemporary Arts, to watch the Hong Kong duo Kay and Jing's AW08 fashion show. Daydream Nation's show, this season, as always, is a theatrical performance. Outside the theatre, two tramps wander around, inside, the live band starts playing, backstage the performers are busy preparing, rehearsing. This season, the theme is "Good Night Deer", telling the tale of a hunter and stag, "kill and be killed"! Models/performers wear outfits with deer motifs, their deer make-up all helps to bring the story-telling part of the brand alive!
